Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Lesson.

Starting with a new music teacher can come with plenty of questions, especially when lessons are for a young child or when you have not had music lessons before.

Here are some of the questions most commonly asked about lessons at L.S. Music Studio.

What ages do you teach?

L.S. Music Studio welcomes children, teenagers and adults. Students can begin as complete beginners or continue developing skills they have already started learning elsewhere. Lessons are adapted according to the student’s age, experience and individual needs.

What happens during a trial lesson?

The trial lesson is an opportunity for us to get to know the student and understand their musical background, interests and goals. Activities and exercises will be selected according to the student’s age and experience, allowing us to assess their current abilities while giving them an enjoyable introduction to the lesson environment.

How long is a lesson?

Regular lessons are 60 minutes. First-time trial lessons are 45 minutes.

What should my child bring to the lesson?

Students generally do not need to bring anything other than their water bottles unless they are already working from a particular piano book, piece of music or song. For students with previous experience, bringing their current materials can help us understand their existing level and progress.

How does rescheduling work?

The studio has a flexible rescheduling policy. If you need to change a lesson because you are unwell, travelling or have another commitment, simply provide at least 24 hours’ notice and we can arrange another suitable time.

For cancellations within 24 hours due to illness, a medical certificate may be requested. In unforeseen circumstances, the cancellation requirement may be waived at the studio’s discretion.

Do adults take lessons too?

Absolutely. Music lessons are not limited to children. Adults are welcome whether they are complete beginners, returning to music after many years or looking to develop an existing musical skill.

Do you prepare students for examinations?

Yes. Classical Piano students can work towards examination preparation for the ABRSM Classical Piano examination, and Pop Vocal students can work towards examination preparation for the LCM Pop Vocal Examination. The focus remains on developing a strong musical and technical foundation rather than simply preparing pieces and songs for an examination.

What happens after the trial?

After the trial, you will receive detailed and thorough feedback on the student’s current strengths, areas for development and recommended direction. If you feel that the studio is a good fit, you can then choose the lesson package that best suits your goals and schedule.

Do I need previous musical experience?

No. Beginners are very welcome. A trial lesson allows us to understand the student’s current level and introduce concepts at an appropriate pace. Students who already have experience can also use the trial to identify areas that can be developed further.

Do you teach in Mandarin?

Yes, we offer lessons in both English and Mandarin to accommodate our diverse student base in Singapore.

How much is a trial lesson?

The first-time trial lesson is $40. Payment is made in advance to reserve the selected appointment.

Do you provide practice materials?

Yes. Students receive personalised notes, recordings, videos and other practice guidance to help them understand what to work on between lessons. This is an important part of helping students continue progressing outside the studio.

What happens if a lesson falls on a public holiday?

Lessons generally continue on public holidays unless otherwise stated. If you would prefer not to have a lesson on a public holiday, simply provide at least 24 hours’ notice so that an alternative arrangement can be made.

Can I choose the songs I want to learn?

Yes. Student interests are taken into consideration when selecting repertoire, particularly for Pop Vocal and Vocal + Pop Piano lessons. Songs are chosen in a way that keeps students motivated while still allowing the appropriate technique and musical skills to be developed.

Do you offer performance opportunities?

Performance opportunities may be offered through studio showcases and other suitable opportunities as they become available. These experiences are designed to help students gradually build confidence and learn how to perform in front of an audience.
